The153th Transition of Modern Typography in Japan 1946-95 Exhibition
February 04, 1999 - February 27, 1999
Typography, or the expression of letters, can be called the culture of the times. We, designers, encountering the beauty of systematic forms in the graphics and typography of the alphabets of the world's advanced countries since the end of the war, have felt very handicapped deploring the complex mixture that our own letters are. Yet, Japanese typography, with such a variety in writing styles, has shown a unique development because of its difference from the rest of the world. In 1995-96, "Transition of Modern Typography-1, 2," an exhibition of the typography of the 1950's and 1960's, was held. This, our second shot, is about Japanese typographies. Ikko Tanaka
