For over four decades Chermayeff & Geismar has maintained a broad vision of what design is, both conceptually and over a wide range of media. As a result we have been involved with very large and complex projects as well as very small ones, encompassing trademarks and symbols, posters, advertising, film and television, and exhibitions at every scale. We have always focused on designing visual solutions which are not of a common style, but grow out of the substance and needs of their clients. There are no fixed answers. We also believe very strongly in cooperating with other designers, artists and photographers and within the firm listening to the ideas of everyone who is thinking about the project at hand. We are flexible and open to ideas. Ideas are the core of all our work, not a recognizable style. The retrospective at ggg presented work which is consistent, imaginative, appropriate, and direct, always reducing the message to its simplest form, communicating across different cultures and for audiences. As a consequence of our approach, most of our work seems timeless, belonging to no special period, but remaining appropriate and fresh. The exhibition is a demonstration of what straightforward, open and flexible graphic design can accomplish. The results have often established themselves as benchmarks for the profession to emulate.
