The Japanese art of the posters has traditionally enjoyed a very high repute in the Czech Republic. Therefore, I am immensely pleased that, thanks to the forthcoming attitude of everyone at the ddd gallery, we have been offered the opportunity to present the contemporary Czech poster production here in Osaka. The poster section ranks among the most valuable as well as the most extensive collections held in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. The museum began collecting posters as early as around 1900 and currently holds approximately 50,000 items. Visitors to the exhibition staged in Japan are offered a select group of seventy Czech posters, including those billing widely known European and Japanese films, posters for Czech "New Wave" films centered around 1960s, plus works for exhibitions, theatrical performances and many other events. The individual exhibits are fascinating and intriguing in that they reflect not just the dominant artistic tendencies of their times, but also the cultural and political climate the prevailing in the former Czechoslovakia.
