The 47th Prints and Titles: 20th Exhibition of Prints from the Tyler Graphics Archive Collection

Titles affixed to paintings and prints explain or supplement the image depicted, and originally they played only a secondary role vis-à-vis a work at hand. But with the coming of the modern era artists began consciously devising titles for their works as an integral element aimed at taking the artistic experience to a deeper level, resulting in myriad titles that transcend mere explanations. At times poetic, at other times arousing the imaginative powers of the viewer, titles themselves came to linger in the mind, adding to their work’s appeal all the more.
This exhibition focused on prints with impressive titles created by artists including Alan Shields and Frank Stella. It offered visitors an opportunity to ponder the relationship between works and their titles.
