For more than 30 years, from the analog to the digital age, Shinnoske Sugisaki and Yoshimaru Takahashi have explored the frontiers of Japanese graphic design. Last year they held a large-scale exhibition at the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg. This ddd gallery exhibition extracts the essence of graphic style cultivated by these two designers in their everyday production work, and explores the origins of communication design by focusing on their respective characteristic styles of construction and figurative design. The theme of this exhibition is “Truth and/or Virtue” (the first characters of the designers’ given names mean “truth” and “virtue,” respectively). This theme is an attempt to link the two designers using the collaborative “And” and the individualistic “Or.” Sugisaki constructs information and images, while Takahashi pursues figurative designs inspired by cultural sentiment. Sugisaki was born in Nara Prefecture, and Takahashi comes from Toyama Prefecture, but the two designers studied in the same year at the same university, and they both work in Osaka. Because the sphere of communication design tends to expand and diffuse, Sugisaki and Takahashi are once again exploring the fundamental nature of graphic design through the compact form of the poster. This exhibition features original works created for this event together with about 40 posters selected from among their previous works.
