For its first exhibition of 2013, in January ginza graphic gallery (ggg) will host a showing of 100 poster works by Shin Matsunaga.

Shin Matsunaga stands among the great pioneers of Japanese design. Through the years he has always approached each task assigned to him with a totally fresh and open mind, and with his sharp vision and superlative sense of balance he has consistently resolved the challenging difficulties his clients have placed before him. His creative world has been described as having a radius of 3 meters, or possessing the aesthetic beauty of everyday life. As his design work for “Scottie” brand tissues and Takara Shuzo’s “Can Chu-Hi” beverage illustrate, with his design genius applied to so many items familiar in everyday life, Mr. Matsunaga has changed Japan’s ambient environment dramatically, elevating it to a high plane of excellence.

For this exhibition at ggg, out of the myriad brilliant works Mr. Matsunaga has created in various genres of his craft, the focus of attention has been placed exclusively on his posters. The 100 posters featured have been personally selected by the artist for this occasion. They include numerous works of great beauty, simplicity and impact deeply reflecting Mr. Matsunaga’s philosophy and approach to his art – including such historical masterpieces as his “Peace,” “Japan” and “Hiroshima Appeals” posters.

We eagerly hope visitors will come to see the drama Mr. Matsunaga invariably creates between contemplative speculation and visual perception – posters embodying his unwavering creed that “there is nothing simple in simplicity.”

In conjunction with the exhibition, a special edition of the gggBooks series dedicated to Shin Matsunaga is scheduled for publication.
