In September ginza graphic gallery (ggg) will host an exhibition on the graphic creations of Bunpei Yorifuji, a designer widely known and admired for his series of advertisements for Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) (“Lessons for Adults on Good Smoking Manners”) and his work for the free magazine “R25.”

Mr. Yorifuji is active in a broad palette of realms, with a focus on advertising art direction and book design, his approach to the world always coolly detached and inimitably unique. Every work he produces is profoundly insightful and meticulously conceived: from his series of good manners posters created for the Tokyo Metro Subway, with their strong but convincingly received messages, to his books on typically avoided but all-too-familiar subjects, like “UNCOCORO” on the “art” of defecation or “SHINICATALOG (THE CATALOGUE OF DEATH),” a comprehensive “guide” to dying. His is a level of originality that is never doomed to fleeting relevance.

“Summer Homework Project” probes the sources of the ideas underlying Mr. Yorifuji’s diverse works to date and examines his unique design theory and examples of how he develops it. The means used are analog – hand-drawn illustrations and words – augmented by resampling, explanations and verifications. Mr. Yorifuji’s perspective is always sharp: at times of cosmic scale in a bird’s-eye view, at other times fixated in millimeter increments. His ways of expressing himself are concise, his methods numerous but each unique, with minimal elements being extracted with precision and reconfigured. He is a master of irony incorporated within humor and cuteness. His visuals penetrate our hearts and minds with brilliant balance.

This exhibition will seek to unlock the secrets and define the appeal of Bunpei Yorifuji’s creative world.
