Not only known as the pioneer of the Polish Poster School, Henryk Tomaszewski (1914–2005) had been a driving force in the world of Polish posters throughout his entire life.

Amid the somber atmosphere demanded by socialist realism, his posters employed glorious color and brimmed with a bracing and unrestrained sense of openness. Tomaszewski’s distinctive abstraction―keenly capturing the conceptual essence and further, paring away the form―generated posters with intelligence, dignity and sophistication, possessing earth-shaking, poetic alchemy that were both riveting and deeply moving. Still, Tomaszewski’s body of work remains every bit as insightfully critical and powerfully influential as ever within the poster design world today, which seems to have become rather slack after the great pioneer’s death.

This exhibition focuses on 101 posters as well as 36 original poster images, drawings, and magazine covers―all drawn from the invaluable collection of Tomaszewski’s son Mr. Filip Pagowski―in approaching the essence of an artist recognized as one of the most influential figures in the history of the twentieth-century poster.
