The Tokyo TDC Annual Awards 2022, an international graphic design competition focusing on the visual representation of written language through type design and typography, attracted a total of 3,644 entries: 1,788 from Japan and 1,856 from overseas. Following rigorous screening by the 35-member selection committee, 514 works were chosen for inclusion in the design yearbook to be published this fall, including 11 prize-winners and 77 nominees. The annual exhibition showcasing competition entries will open on April 1, displaying about 130 works of the world’s most cutting-edge graphics including those that were awarded or nominated for prizes. This year’s exhibition again features a line-up of splendid topical works. We look forward to welcoming you to the show.

Award Ceremony and Design Forum TDCDAY:
A decision on the format for the award ceremony and the design forum TDCDAY to be held in early April, coinciding with the opening of the exhibition, will be made in March, bearing in mind the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. As soon as details have been decided (on or after March 5), they will be announced on the Tokyo TDC website. Please see:

Type Design Prize
- Jean François Porchez (France) “Altesse”: Typeface emulating the letters engraved by French copperplate engravers of the 19th and 20th centuries.
- Issay Kitagawa + Semitransparent Design (Japan) “3&bC Website”: Website displaying products at maximum size depending on device size.
- Thierry Blancpain & Noël Leu (Switzerland) “Grilli Type”: Website introducing the GT Maru typeface, influenced by Japanese visual culture.
- Low Sek-vai (China) “The Curtain Rises & Falls:” Poster for exhibition by book designer Lu Jingren displaying independent publications.
- Yutaka Sato (Japan) “Useless Boxes”: Experimental works featuring graphics drawn with gel ink ballpoint pens on matchbox-sized blank boxes.
- Noriaki Hayashi (Japan) “Joshibi University of Art and Design:” Image poster aimed at high schools and art preparatory schools throughout Japan.
- Louis Mikolay & Erik Berger Vaage, Collins (USA), “San Francisco Symphony Rebrand”: Visual image design defining and expressing a new vision for the rebranding of the San Francisco Symphony, which has a history stretching back 108 years.
- Kazunari Hattori (Japan) “Nakajo”: A 640-page collection setting out the works of Masayoshi Nakajo in chronological order. Published by ADP with editorial input by Kaoru Kasai.
- Taku Satoh (Japan) “Milk”: An exhibition seeking to repurpose the artist’s own cut-up milk package designs as art.
