This summer, ginza graphic gallery will be transformed by Koichi Kosugi, art director and creative director, into a fantastic amusement park.

Kosugi says he was fond of drawing from the time he was in grade school. But more than the act of drawing itself, he says it was the pleasure his drawings brought to others that motivated him and made him happy. His family took pleasure in his portraits of them; his friends were enamored of his manga. Kosugi’s name says it all: Koichi 幸一 literally translates to “happy one.” Now, as an adult, through his design works Kosugi continues to create happy messages – messages with a positive outlook – for people everywhere.

Kosugi says a designer or art director isn’t merely someone who creates visual images: they are people who take a given approach to something and “translate” it into something tangible. He defines translation as taking the particular thoughts or perceptions of a client or project team and, passing them through his own subjective lens, transforming them into words or visual forms. After joining Hakuhodo, for several years Kosugi closely observed the work being done by Kenjiro Sano, and from his observations he developed the skills to create works uniquely his own. These skills meshed with the inborn nature of the childhood Koichi who took pleasure from making others happy, enabling Kosugi to become a “translator” nonpareil who could lithely pass beyond conventional boundaries.

The Graphic Park exhibition will encompass Koichi Kosugi’s representative works, including his advertising designs and campaigns, CI designs, branding designs, and much more. In his play-filled park, visitors are sure to enjoy rediscovering their childhood innocence and experiencing the boundless world of creativity.
