Exhibition planned through a collaboration between the kyoto ddd gallery and the Art Manager Training Program of the Kyoto Institute of Technology “How Will You Go, and Where? Travel is Wonderful”

■ Overview of Project
For you, what associations does the word “travel” bring to mind? Have you ever gotten excited by discovering an unfamiliar place on a poster you spotted, inside a train or in the city? As a key form of media showcasing transportation vehicles and tourist destinations, posters have developed a close connection with people.
For this exhibition, we tried to select posters that capture travel from the standpoint of movement, location, and the enjoyment and sentiments which accompany travel. The exhibition looks at travel through posters: how means of transportation have spread, how information on regions and the world have been communicated to people, and how emotions toward travel are evoked. From the extensive poster collections of the DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion and the Museum and Archives of the Kyoto Institute of Technology, we introduce a variety of works selected based on the keyword “travel.”
This exhibition was planned by nine students in the 2015 Art Manager Training Program of the Kyoto Institute of Technology.

Symposium “Modern Tourism in Japan as Seen in Tourism Posters”
Purpose of Event:
Posters were a new form of media in early modern Japan, and they developed a close connection with people as a key format for introducing transportation vehicles and tourist destinations. What sort of visual images of travel did tourism posters offer to consumers inside and outside Japan in the period of growing national prestige, the period of high economic growth, and the period of the bubble economy? And how did they arouse the emotion of traveling to the model city of Kyoto, and locations in all areas of Japan? We hope to approach the relationship between tourism posters and tourism in early modern Japan, based on the extensive range of posters held by the DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion and the Museum and Archives of the Kyoto Institute of Technology.

Workshop “Let’s Create an Original Poster”
This is an event where participants use the exhibited works as inspiration for making original posters that evoke a feeling that “It’s great to travel.”
・Date and time: November 20, 2016 (Sun.) 14:00–16:00
・Place: kyoto ddd gallery
・Capacity: 15 participants; (Elementary school students or older; students in lower grade levels must be accompanied by a parent or guardian)
・Participation fee: Free (First 15 persons to arrive will be participants)
・Items to bring: Nothing required. If you have some materials you would like to use, please bring them.
Finished poster size will be B3.
