In June, ginza graphic gallery (ggg) will host an exhibition of Jianping He, a designer from China residing in Germany.
In 1997, Jianping He moved to Germany and studied at Berlin University of Arts. Since then, based in both Hangzhou and Berlin, he has actively played an important part as a bridge between Europe and Asia. He has also been travelling around the world, communicating and discussing with designers of the same generation, absorbing knowledge of various design style and expression, while gaining borderless global perspective. He is highly acclaimed internationally, and it can be said that he is one of the most note worthy young upcoming graphic designers in the world.
Jianping He’s works hold conceptual sense of Europe, together with the sign of Asian touch. In his works, he combines photography and typography, which turn out to be radical, strong, and beautifully expressed visual language, overflowing with deep contemplation.
The exhibition, “Jianping He Flashback,” will ‘Flashback’ to his 15 years of career, introducing selection of more than 50 posters and book designs.
“ggg Books-101 Jianping He” will also be published in tandem with the show.

Profile: Jianping He

Jianping He was born in 1973, China. He is now living in Berlin, working as a graphic designer, professor, and publisher.

He studied graphic design at the China Academy of Art (1991-1994), Master of Fine Arts in Berlin University of Arts (1997-2001) and had his PhD of cultural history in Free University of Berlin in 2011. He has been teaching in Berlin University of the Arts, employed as a guest professor by Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and China Academy of Arts in Hangzhou. In 2002 he established his own design studio and publishing house, hesign, based in Berlin with the other branch in Hangzhou since 2008.

His works have been globally awarded. Silver medal at the 2nd Ningbo International Poster Biennial (2001); Silver (2008) and Bronze prize (2010, 2011) in New York ADC ; Silver prize at International Poster Biennial in Warsaw (2001, 2010); First Prize at the Lahti International Poster Biennial in Finland (2005); Silver prize in Hong Kong International Poster Triennial (2004, 2010); the Golden Bee 7 - Moscow International Biennial of Graphic Design (2006); Award for Typographic Excellence New York TDC in USA and Tokyo TDC in Japan (2007-2011); Silver medal at the International Poster Biennial in Mexico (2010); Bronze medal of HKDA Asia Design Award (currently called HKDA Global Design Award) in Hong Kong (2009). In 2006 he received the Poster Art Yard in Rüttenscheid prize in Essen, Germany. His solo exhibitions have taken place in Germany, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Taiwan.

He was elected as a member of the examination committee for the Master Level diploma in school of design ESAG Penninghin, Paris. He has taken on being an international judge, judging such competition such as 100 Best Posters of the Year – Germany Austria Switzerland, the International Biennale of Theatre Posters - Rzeszów, the International Poster Biennial in Warsaw, the Ningbo International Poster Biennial, the red dot design award, and the Design for Asia Award in Hong Kong and many more. He is also a member of the AGI.
