Why do we travel? Answering this fundamental question isn’t easy, all the more so in these times of diversified lifestyles. Different people have different reasons for going places. Some say wanderlust – the desire to roam – is an inborn human instinct. Ever since we evolved from apes, humans have continuously migrated about the planet. Indeed, migrating is a trait of humankind. Some anthropologists refer to such beings as Homo mobilitas.

In ancient times, humans moved about out of necessity, looking for a suitable place to live, or at times based on a set of beliefs. Today, the human race has become fundamentally sedentary and, with few exceptions, there is no longer an absolute need to move about. Even so, travel, or the desire to travel, remains a part of us, the manifestation of a yearning to put aside our everyday life, to experience a different culture or natural environment, or simply to have new experiences. We have a universally shared, inbred craving for the out-of-the-ordinary. Yet paradoxically, it is through travel that we often come to recognize the value of where we were before setting out on our journey. In this respect, travel is premised on the circumstance of having a place, or a life, to return to. Travel is but a temporary experience removing ourselves from the ordinary.

Today, amid the coronavirus pandemic, we remain unable to travel, or to enjoy travel, freely over long distances. No longer something we do for pleasure, now travel has become something unsettling, something to be avoided. Our curiosity, our yearning after distant places and the unknown, remains intact, however, for wanderlust is a compulsion deeply rooted in all humans.

This exhibition brings together posters gleaned from the DNP Graphic Design Archives collection at CCGA that relate to travel in the broadest sense. Travel encompasses numerous elements, such as modes of transportation, destinations, and experiences acquired where we travel. In the advertising field, many works deal with transportation or promote specific tourist attractions; and even today, when fewer posters are created than earlier, we can still find graphics of these kinds. Ads that feature photos of beautiful locations overseas and the like, while not directly related to travel, are also created in abundance. They incorporate ad expressions effective in arousing our wanderlust, our longing to visit distant, unknown places, and many remain indelibly in our memories. Our hope is that visitors to the gallery, upon seeing these works relating to travel expressed through graphic design, will get a sense of our endless human quest to roam. And we hope their visit will provide visitors a small and momentary “journey” into realms beyond the ordinary.
